A surprising catalyst for Stem Cell Research Advancement

Collecting aluminium to help the Lions Cord Blood Foundation is a wonderful initiative that combines environmental responsibility with supporting medical research and healthcare advancements.

The Lions Cord Blood Foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses on cord blood banking and research. Cord blood, obtained from the umbilical cord after childbirth, contains valuable stem cells that can be used for treating various diseases and conditions.

This project also continues the volunteers of Rotary Chadstone/East Malvern’s goal to partner with other organisations and their projects.

Here is how the process works: The first step involves collecting aluminium items from various sources, such as foil, pie plates, wine caps and other aluminium-based packaging such as medications (these being our top two donate items). Volunteer collectors have found innovative ways to collect these items including asking their friends and family to collect and dropping into their local and asking for the caps that would otherwise go into general recycling.  This allows our wonderful volunteers to promote the project and share what we are doing with our wider community.

Since we have undertaken this project in 2021 we have collected over 50kg of aluminium.  The collected aluminium is then sold to recyclers, and the proceeds from the recycling process are directed towards supporting the Lions Cord Blood Foundation.

Bring your clean aluminium to our club meetings for Tania who is managing this project.
