Building Washroom Toilets in Cambodia

Next >

Rotary Chadstone East Malvern is part of a Rotary team changing the lives of over 300 families in remote rural Cambodia by building Washroom Toilets with financial support from the Rotary Foundation.

Here we are:

Funding has been approved and digging has started!!

The attached photos show the families that will benefit from the first Washroom Toilets and the team digging the first lot of tanks into the ground.

The project has started in Kok Beng village where we will install new Washroom Toilets and in the odd situation where a toilet already exists, we will rebuild the underground tanks because the existing systems are contaminating the village drinking water.

We have split construction into two stages – below ground and above ground. The below ground work will be done now before the wet season starts.

Stay tuned for more updates – and hereunder is some background information for those people that are not familiar with the project.

Background

Rotary Chadstone East Malvern is one of 18 Rotary Clubs working together to deliver life changing amenities in remote rural Cambodia.

The Rotary Team is building about 345 Washroom Toilets. A Washroom Toilet is a family toilet but with the above ground shelter built wider so that women can bathe themselves and their children in safety and with dignity. Currently the women are exposed to sexual and physical assaults when they use the bushland as their toilet.

Further the engineering design of the two tank below ground septic toilet system ensure that clean water is returned to the aquifer as this is the source of drinking water. Currently human waste seeps back into the aquifer and the cycle of gastro and other illnesses is compounded.

The Rotary Foundation has approved this project for grant funding. All up about $US 220,000/$Aust330,000 will be invested.

Rotary Chadstone East Malvern have turned many sausages at Bunnings and conducted many craft markets to provide it share of the funding. The Rotary Foundations acknowledges both the fund raising efforts of Rotarian's and the life changing nature of the project by add a large share of the total project costs.
